In terms of both form and function, luxury was the keyword when Vancouver designer Karla Amadatsu of Kerrisdale Design created this bistro-chic kitchen as part of a large-scale new build she worked on for about two years. After living in their beloved historical Vancouver neighbourhood for more than two decades, the empty-nester homeowners decided to tear down their house and start from scratch. The dream home they built features charming French Colonial architecture combined with fresh clean finishes to create a contemporary yet classic look.

This aesthetic continues into the 18-by-25-foot kitchen through substantial architectural features, an abundance of marble and an interesting mix of metals inspired by the iconic French La Cornue range. Even further luxury topped it all off: “In their house, there are actually two kitchens,” says Karla. “Adjacent to this one, there’s a kitchen the homeowners use for heavier cooking. So the goal for this room was to create an elegant entertaining space that didn’t feel too utilitarian.”

A mix of Carrara and White Thassos marbles, the standout patterned floor imbues interest and a sense of richness. “Incorporating a combination of marbles offers a graphic look that echoes the cabinet fronts and ceiling,” says designer Karla Amadatsu. The Statuario marble used on the countertops and backsplash ties in with the flooring and adds another luxe layer that’s cohesive but not repetitive. Pairing all the marble with white cabinetry allows its stunning veining to shine; the grey island base was key in grounding the almost all-white space. The rattan stools lend a classic French bistro vibe.

The stately French La Cornue range served as inspiration for this kitchen’s mix of brass, stainless steel and polished nickel. The stainless steel range hood, which boasts contrasting brass strapping, was custom-made to coordinate with the range.

An apron-front sink and curvaceous polished nickel bridge faucet offer vintage charm. “I love that the sink is white, because it doesn’t take away from the beautiful veining on the marble countertops,” says Karla.

The cabinetry flanking the range hood features antiqued mirror panels with a decorative X motif. “The antiqued mirror offers an aged quality, which is nice in contrast with the fresh white,” says Karla. For continuity, the X design is repeated where the beams meet on the coffered ceiling and the mirror panels are echoed in the eat-in area’s built-in china cabinet.
